Mompreneur #5 : Victoria (Tory) Sutherland-Dadds

It is always so impressive to me when people know from a young age what they want to do with their life. Most take years and a few career changes before finding something they love. Some people never do. Tory is one of the lucky few who found her talent early on and has turned it into a successful career.

I can’t decide if I’m more impressed with the feathers or the eye

Growing up she was always fascinated by tattoos. Luckily for Tory, she is very creative and after she finished matric she went on to art school to hone her talent. Straight afterwards she did an apprenticeship in a tattoo and piercing studio that she ended up buying and running within a year. She isn’t just creative, she is also ambitious and driven. Tattoos by Tory is her brainchild.

I found Tory when I asked for recommendations online. There was a piece of work I wanted done and her name kept popping up. Her previous clients couldn’t stop raving about her so I checked out her Facebook page to have a look at her work…and I was sold!

Then I found out that she is a Mobile Tattoo Artist!!! I didn’t even realise that was a thing! I contacted her immediately and could only get a booking two and a half months later. (Which is an excellent sign of a good tattoo artist for those who havn’t had one done before) I chatted to her online and what made me very comfortable was how forthcoming she is about her hygiene practices. She sent through a very detailed description of how she keeps everything sterile and disposes of all waste products. This was incredibly refreshing as some artists get quite offended if you even ask to see the needle being opened. (Alarm bells!!)

I finally got to meet her on Saturday and she is incredible! Her work is meticulous and she’s really fast. She was also kind enough to accommodate a few changes I made at the last minute without batting an eye. Here’s the finished piece that took about an hour and a half:

It still looks gorgeous even with the slight swelling. I love it!

We had such a nice chat while she worked on me. Everything from good primary schools to religion. I found out that Tory had sold her studio so that she could have more time and flexibility with her son. As a single mum to a brilliant son with ADHD, she has her hands full. Being mobile gives her the chance to be there for his soccer games and fetch him after school. You can tell very easily that her son is the centre of her universe and that changing her working style to fit around him was no sacrifice. He really sounds like a very interesting young man.

If you are thinking of getting a tattoo done, I cannot recommend Tory highly enough. You can check out more of her work on her websiteFacebook and Instagram

This is not a sponsored post. This series is my way of helping my fellow mums because we need all the help we can get! If you would like to be featured or you know someone who fits the Mompreneur role, you can e-mail me on thenonadventuresofasahm@gmail.com
