• My evolving relationship with a girl named Barbie

Every family has stories that snowball into epic proportions as the years go by. Those tales from childhood that get dusted off and brought out at birthdays, weddings and other major life events to remind kids that they are lucky to have such forgiving and patient parents. I have three such stories from my childhood, each involving tantrums to varying degrees of ‘what the hell?!’ For the sake of this blog post I will share one with you. Luckily, its the least dramatic one. The year was 1986. I was out shopping with my mum, aunt and uncle when I spotted this… Those colours, sequins and general shininess would be…

  • It’s been a year, and what a year it’s been!

I know I come across all professional and knowledgeable (haha! wishful thinking!) but I have only been on the South African blogging scene for about a year now. I wrote my very first post in January 2016 without ever thinking that anyone would read what I wrote. This site was my anonymous, online journal, my space to work out the feelings that I could not, or would not, verbally express. Since then it has evolved into so much more. My husband, sister and best friend were my test subjects and their positive feedback gave me the last push I needed to eventually take the leap in September last year. I…

  • Are we spoiling our kids?

This past week was Birthday Madness Week. I called it that because the celebrations lasted almost a full week and we were all going a little mad. It has become tradition for my husband to take our daughter out on the day before her birthday for a special Daddy-Daughter Date. She dressed in a pretty new (it was actually a hand me down but she hadn’t seen it before so I wasn’t about to correct her) dress and waited patiently in the lounge for her date to come and fetch her. My husband left work early so that he could take her to Monte Casino for a special ‘big girl’…

  • Hello, My name is Nadia and I am an addict

Not addicted to wine. Not addicted to drugs. I’m a Facebookaddict. God I hate that app. And I love it. We have a complicated relationship. I literally lose hours scrolling and scrolling and scrolling. For what?! I rarely get any enjoyment from it. I’m actually hating what I’m doing AS I’m doing it but I just can’t stop. I need that one more scroll just in case there’s something super interesting to see. BUT THERE NEVER IS!!!! It is a great way to store photos though. And connect with people. Bleh. Also apparently a whatsapp addict. This I didn’t realise until my husband brought to my attention how often I click the Home…

  • How switching off the TV gave us our darling daughter back

Our television has been one of my closest companions and best babysitters for the past three years. When A was just born and J went back to work (after a month at home), I watched Sopranos from start to finish. That’s SIX seasons! Add in a few seasons of Grimm, White Collar, Suits and Lie to me and you get a clear idea of what my life was like. For four months A wouldn’t nap for longer than 20 minutes during the day unless I carried her. And her internal clock only registered ‘bedtime’ as 6am for the loooooooooooongest time.  So I had a lot of time on my…
