📚Genre – Autobiography
📚First Impressions – Everyone knows who Michelle Obama is and I assumed that this book would be an endless stream of achievements that led to the White House. I was right, and I was wrong.
📚Review – This is one beautifully written love story. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a romance, but instead a tribute to Michelle’s parents, her mentors, her husband and her kids.
The book is broken down into 3 sections:
BECOMING ME: this gives you an insiders view to life in the South Side of Chicago. You will see what life was like for a young black child living in a neighborhood that was slowly deteriorating but whose family life was so empowering that it didn’t make much of an impact on her. It is a story of determination and hard work as well as freedom. Freedom to be a kid and freedom to discover and develop who she was with the gentle guidance of her parents.
BECOMING US: there is no holding back and you get an honest take on what it is like to fall in love with a man who is as amazing as he is dedicated to improving the lives of everyone around him. Michelle was an unwilling passenger on the road to the White House but once she arrived, she owned the role.
BECOMING MORE: very few people get to know what goes on behind the scenes at the White House, until now. Michelle Obama is so open and real and I was shocked to find out that the First Family gets an invoice at the end of each month for all grocery and household costs incurred by the family…they paid for their own TP yo! 😱 There’s obviously way more important information covered but that one really stuck with me 😂
📚 Final thoughts – This book will inspire you but the inspiration comes from the ordinariness of Michelle’s life as opposed to the uniqueness. She wasn’t born with a genius IQ or a silver spoon in her mouth, she didn’t have a string of amazing opportunities that just landed in her lap or a network of family connections.
Michelle Obama is every woman. She is the girl who feels insecure in a group of seemingly more attractive girls. She is the woman who needed help to understand and accept why her husband couldn’t always put her first. She is the mum who wants to give her kids the freedom to become confident and capable adults. She is all of us. She is who we could all become if we push harder and aim higher.
📚 Rating – 10/10
I loved this book (clearly!). I loved the honesty. I loved the realness. I loved finding out that Barack Obama really is as amazing as he seems in the media. I also loved how relatable the story was. If you don’t have it already, get yourself a copy and let me know what you think.
