There is a vault filled with over $25 Million in gold, hidden in a house in Miami that was previously owned by Pablo Escobar. The vault is not only hidden, it is also severely booby trapped. Now there are competing criminals after the legendary gold who will stop at nothing to get it.
Cari Mora is a young immigrant who has escaped to America from her violent upbringing as a child soldier. She is the caretaker and the only person who isn’t afraid to stay in the mannequin filled house overnight. Cari catches the eye of Hans-Peter, one of the criminals on the hunt for the treasure. Not only is he a thief, he also traffics women to fill the violent fantasies of rich men.
This is a tale of the darkest depths of greed and the highest peaks of survival.
I was so excited to read this book because Thomas Harris is the same author who wrote the Hannibal Lecter series. I expected suspense mixed with a bit of horror and to be kept at the edge of my seat. What a waste of time. This story had so much of potential but it was just really scattered and lacked depth. There’s some story lines that go nowhere and others that feel as if you have been plonked in half way through. Cari is a pretty cool character but all the others (yes, all) were either uninteresting of half formed as characters. Even Hans-Peter who is clearly a despicable person, comes off more as if he needs medical intervention than scary.
Cari Mora would translate better into a screenplay for a series. There would be lots of blood and explosions and possibly a few sex scenes. If you’re looking for some light reading in the bath or on holiday then this may be the book for you.
4. I want those two nights of my life back to read something else.
