• A Day in the Life of a Mentally Ill Mum

I know that there will be some who will take offense to the title of this post. Before you do, you need to know that the title was decided on by the very brave woman who shared her day with us. If she is happy with it (and believe me, she put a lot of thought into this feature) then please do not get upset on her behalf. I met Laetitia (Tish) through a blogging group and I was SO intimidated by her because she runs Poppet Patch which has about a gazillion followers and she is taken very seriously by parents, brands and the blogging community in general. What…

  • I'm not a superstitious person…

This post is exceptionally long and is more to keep a record of the unusual streak of bad luck I just had. Be warned, you may feel down in the dumps by the end…if you get there. *** I’m really not superstitious. I’ll walk under a ladder if its the shortest route without a second thought. A broken mirror is just another mess to sweep up albeit more carefully.  Two weeks ago I almost cancelled our vacation to see my folks, meet my sisters new boyfriend who she is going to be following to another country and attend our best friends baby shower which I was also part-hosting. Why you…

  • Does anyone have a time machine I could borrow?

I have had the shittiest five days. Actually, make that ten days. Let me explain.  Our ‘family-time week’ was taken over by grocery shopping, blog interviews, school drop offs and pick ups, hellish traffic in Fourways (wtf!!a 10 min drive took an hour!!) and car shopping every damn day. Poor J went from dealership to dealership trying to find a car that fitted our budget (R100k-R120k), with a decent mileage (<60,000) and that wasn’t the size of a sardine can. Turns out our requirements are unreasonable (say what??) because we still dont have a second car. This may seem like a small hiccup but it means  A can’t go to…

  • The unnecessary shame of bedwetting

Is your child a bedwetter? Were you? Do you feel embarassed to answer these questions? Embarassed to even be asked? I would have…before I attended the Drynites event. I went expecting a pleasant morning out and a distraction from my usual day to day but I actually left with a change in mindset. I don’t know a single parent who looks forward to changing sheets and pjs in the middle of the night. It’s annoying and it is frustrating. Especially when your child is fully potty trained during the day and has been for a while. Here’s the thing: bedwetting is caused by the uncontrolled release of urine during sleep. The key…

  • CPR/First Aid Course

On Saturday I attended my first CPR and First Aid Course for infants and children. I really don’t know why I have put this off for so long. I feel empowered now. Still terrified that I will ever have to use this knowledge but confident that if I need to I’ll be more capable.  These were the dolls that we practiced on. Freaky little half body boys. But they were super useful to know how hard you actually need to press for compressions and how to position the head when breathing into the lungs. I must confess I had to remove myself a bit from the situation while practicing because…

  • I havn't disappeared

Well…I guess I kinda have. My hormones have been throwing me completely off kilter to the point where I have taken some calming tablets on the really bad days. Blogging feels a bit too emotionally draining for me to attempt at the moment. Will get back to it as soon as my body calms down.

  • Happiness guilt

The day after we brought our new baby home was supposed to be exhausting and euphoric. Instead it started on a horrific note.  I found out that my cousin’s son, who had just turned two, was diagnosed with leukaemia. I was in shock. He had been unwell the week before but it was assumed it was just his molars making their appearance. He had a fever on and off and was crabby. The usual teething signs. He got a bit better and went back to creche. When he was picked up at midday his grandparents noticed a slight bruise on his forehead. No big deal right? Kids get hurt all…

  • Huff and Puff and Blow the house down!

Check this out. Its a kiddies inhaler thingamajig. I’m not sure if this is new or not but it’s new to me.  My daughter has a bad reaction to Demazan and Venteze. By bad i mean she loses her shit. I wish I was exaggerating but I’m not. It’s like she’s on drugs. Her energy sky rockets and she’s almost literally bouncing off the walls. The first time she fell ill she was prescribed both of these. That first night we kept scolding her for jumping everywhere and screaming and just acting too hyper. Then we realised that she just wasn’t…right. It was as if she couldn’t stop herself from…
