In light of August being Women’s Month, I thought it would be the perfect time to promote some hard working mums. You could find the service provider you were looking for or be inspired to take that leap you’ve been dreaming of.
Q&A WITH TARRA
1. Tell me a little about yourself without including details of your family and work (it’s tough I know 😂)
I’m artistic, talkative and love food more than I should haha. I’m very critical of myself and always strive to do the best I can. I’m lazy but love to work. In my free time I like to be away from the world, just relaxing or maybe watching a good movie.
2. How many kids do you have and what are their ages?
I’m a mom of 1 boy named Joshua, he’s almost 2 years old. He is my reason point. He is everything and more. He’s busy, mischievous and has such a sense of humor. He makes every second worth it.
3. What is your side hustle? And when did you start?
I do platters, cakes, cupcakes, tarts, sweet treats and so much more. I started on the 26th of March 2018 by printing on baby clothes. I still offer printing but don’t always have time. Food, cakes and bakes is my absolute passion at the moment.
4. What did you do before starting your own business AND what made you leave?
I was a full-blown drug addict by the age of 18 and did not finish matric hence me not knowing what I wanted to do with my life at that point. I got sober at 21 and started working in retail. I worked at 3 different places and just felt my soul dying. I resigned from a call center in December 2017 after my son turned 1, still not knowing what I’m going to do. 3 months down the line in March 2018 MOM WITH A PLAN was born. I longed to be home with my son. I wanted to figure my future out and I think I have now.
5. How do you allocate your time between work and family?
My son goes to creche most days and my husband works 6 days a week. He’s also self employed. We both hustle hard all the time. I normally take a day off in the week and spend it with my son. Weekends are for my friends and family.
6. What have been the hardships of running your own business?
Money. Having your own business is no joke. We battle. I battle to make ends meat however business is picking up for the both of us and we put our all into working hard. I make enough to cover everything I have to and a little extra. It could only get better.
7. What have been the highlights?
I get to do things on my terms and my time. I get to spend time with my son and family when I want, how I want. I love being creative in my own space and seeing the reactions of my customers are pricelist!! I might not make as much money as I used to but who cares?! I’m happy for the first time in years.
8. What advice do you have for other women who are on the cusp of taking the leap into entrepreneurship?
My mom always said to do what makes me happy and to always try my best and that’s the words I always live by. If you have the heart and determination to see something through, then do it!! Just do it!! Your worth it.
