Women’s Month Mompreneur #22 – Michelle Goncalves – Franchise Owner

In light of August being Women’s Month, I thought it would be the perfect time to promote some hard working mums. You could find the service provider you were looking for or be inspired to take that leap you’ve been dreaming of.

Q&A WITH MICHELLE

1. Tell me a little about yourself without including details of your family and work (it’s tough I know 😂)

I am a 28 year old mother and wife who loves to bake, read a good book (when there is time of course lol) and spend time with family and friends. I love animals, people (mostly children – they’re kinder :)) and the beautiful Mother City of Cape Town 🙂 I am an honest, kind and loving person but being stubborn and impatient can sometimes be my downfall as well as food lol

2. How many kids do you have and what are their ages?

I have a son, who is 22 months 🙂 the sweetest little face

3. What is your side hustle? And when did you start?

I am the proud owner of the Moms & Babes and Moms & Tots Boksburg franchises. These are weekly classes attended by mother and baby/toddler whereby we provide age appropriate stimulation for the children. It also provides socializing and bonding time for the mother and child. Classes are an hour and a half long once a week. Classes included: free play, story time, messy play, outdoor play and a lot of bonding and socializing time. We believe in Learning Through Play.

4. What did you do before starting your own business AND what made you leave?

I have an Honours Degree in BCom Marketing Management from the University of Pretoria and have always been in marketing. I come from a franchising background whereby I was the Marketing Manager of a fantastic brand called Sunburst Electric for 2 years. I moved onto being the Sales and Marketing Manager at a wonderful ICT company called The Virtual Group.

I can’t say I left because I didn’t like my job, my co-worker or my bosses. I chose to leave because I felt like I missed my calling and I didn’t want it to be too late before I took action. I also decided to stop letting fear control my desire to own my own business and work with mothers and their little ones.

5. How do you allocate your time between work and family?

I try and keep my weekends and weekday evenings for family time. We also try going away on short holidays to spend quality time together, although it never really feels like enough does it 🙂

6. What have been the hardships of running your own business?

I am very new at being a business owner but thus far I have found it difficult to find mommies who want to join my Moms and Babes/Tots Workshop classes. I also worry that I may fail and disappoint my family and the mommies who have joined.

7. What have been the highlights?

Being able to have more family time and flexibility over my own time and especially being able to work with children. I have a passion for them and regret not going into teaching, so this is like my second chance at doing just that, being able to do something I love.

8. What advice do you have for other women who are on the cusp of taking the leap into entrepreneurship?

Go with your gut and pray for a sign that will give you encouragement and the push you need. No one can say that something will definitely work or won’t work. You won’t know unless you try. And yes, with our economic crisis, it is tough and fear can hold us back from doing many things but I do believe if you have the passion for something and the determination – it can work.
