Women’s Month Mompreneur #28 – Jeanne-Riëtte Martins – Content Creator, Blogger, and HR Whizzkid

In light of August being Women’s Month, I thought it would be the perfect time to promote some hard working mums. You could find the service provider you were looking for or be inspired to take that leap you’ve been dreaming of.

Q&A WITH JEANNE-RIËTTE

1. Tell me a little about yourself without including details of your family and work (it’s tough I know 😂)

Excluding family and work… gosh, what else is there? Well I am a Jozi girl, even though I have moved around, I have always been a Jozi girl and there’s nothing quite like life in SA.

Since I can remember, I have always loved writing, learning, creating and dreaming. I am all about peace, love and the lighter side of life.

2. How many kids do you have and what are their ages?

We have a modern family with three children – one of his, one of mine and one of ours. Caroline is his, 22. Wade is mine, 9, and Blake is our little fantastical 5 year old. SuperDad is my husband, rock, comfort and best friend. My hero!

3. What is your side hustle? And when did you start?

I don’t like that word “hustle”. Will I Am said in an interview with Oprah that nobody wants a car that “hustles” or “grinds”, you just want it to run smoothly. I digress…

I suppose my side activity is my blog. MammaChef Jozi is my blog about family, food and positive living. It’s driven by pure love and whatever speaks to me at a given time. I have been officially blogging for a year and two months.

4. What did you do before starting your own business AND what made you leave?

I was HR and Payroll Manager for a group of companies for a few years before I started working as a consultant. I spent about a year doing mostly B-BBEE and HR Consulting for a company and just felt that there was more that I wanted to do. I was unhappy where I was and it was time to take a leap of faith.

I first joined Majenta Personnel to add an HR division to their existing recruitment business and while I am still involved in that, I have been fortunate enough to start a new business as well! Majenta Media is a social media, design and content creation agency that is a dream come true for me! I absolutely love every minute of it!

5. How do you allocate your time between work and family?

One important factor in my decision to become an entrepreneur was my family. My boys are little, they’re busy and they want me around. I wanted more flexibility to be there for them.

Family is my priority and I value our time together, I won’t compromise on that.

6. What have been the hardships of running your own business?

It can definitely take its toll emotionally. I have been financially stressed, pulled in different directions, doubted myself and thought of giving up. I have had an incredible amount of support though and have worked daily on keeping myself going.

7. What have been the highlights?

Wow, there have been many… I have met amazing people, have learned and grown so much. I recognise daily just how much support I have around me and it’s a huge blessing.

After having started my own business with HR and Payroll consulting (which is what I know), I eventually found my way into starting a second business around my true passion, which is writing and creating. Something I never thought was possible became my daily life and I couldn’t be more grateful!

8. What advice do you have for other women who are on the cusp of taking the leap into entrepreneurship?

Trust your intuition, do what feels good and right to you.

There may be thousands of people who do what you do, but nobody can do it quite like you do. Be YOU!

Never give up.
